Conquering the Great Divide

You may have noticed things look different around here.

More and more my Vintage journey and my Craft endeavours are crossing over, what with me planning to make a wardrobes full of clothes and considering dabbling in some Diesel/Steampunk couture.

So I’ve merged my two blogs, kabang!

It may take a while to make sure that things are going to go smoothly with layout and contents, galleries etc.  But please be patient and let me know of any boo-boos.

Why I Love Being in a Guild

I had a Knitters Guild meeting today, just like the 2nd Saturday in every other month. There was really no difference to todays meeting, but I took a moment of reflection during our ’show and tell’ time just to really stop and appreciate what being in a guild means to me.

Once a month, I get to sit in a room with a bunch of other knitters, talk about knitting, show off what we’re making (or have made) and most importantly, be inspired! Not a month has gone by where I haven’t felt overwhelmed by peoples’ creativity and skill.

There is no other place I can go to feel inspired like I am at guild meetings. Today I saw examples of exquisite lace, cozy cowls and colourful scarves. We had a hands on mini-workshop of Judy’s Magic Cast on (which is great for toe up socks, or used instead of a provisional cast on), and lots of fondling of other peoples projects and yarns.

I love being part of this group of knitters. Inner City Knitters Guild ROCKS!

Even Doozers Knit!

Preparing for a Year of Shows!

I’ve decided that in 2011 I’m going to ‘do the rounds’ when it comes to entering stuff into shows.  Mainly spinning and handspun knits, as that’s what I’d like to concentrate on this coming year.

Now I need to compile the schedules from a few different shows to see what the commonalities are.  I want all of my yarn & garments to be useable by me, so there’ll be no novelty or Mohair yarns.

Also keep in mind, that stuff that is going into shows can’t be used or worn before being shown.  So anything I make won’t be able to be worn/used until after Dec 2011, or until I decide to stop showing them.

I can of course start showing things as they are finished, because most shows allow between 12-18 months of prior completion.

Lots to ponder.

Taking Another Step.

The pants aren’t finished. They’re not far off, but life likes to get in the way.  My poor 3yo has had a mild chest infection, so all efforts have been made to try to keep him still(ish), and quiet(ish).  So I’ve been in “cuddling/nursing” gear all week.  Not glamourous at ALL, and in fact, I’ve delved into the comfy track pants/T-shirts for the week.  Not stylish, OR fun, but easiest for cuddling a sick little boy.

So, what are my next lot of plans for ‘fixing’ my ‘lack of glam’ problem.  Well, once the pants pattern is sorted, I will probably work on a button down shirt and skirt patterns next.  This will give me more or less a ‘uniform’ that I can throw on every day with very little thinking involved.  I don’t mind uniforms really.  Especially if they’re the kind I can leave the house in and still look put together.

And I’d like to find a pair of 1″ heel black shoes.  Wedges or courts will work.

Well.. I’m off to write a shopping list!

So Many Projects!

I really need to set up a schedule to work on all the WIP’s and projects I want to start.  I’ve just put something else on the needles (albeit that it’s for a show’n'tell for this weekends guild meeting), and should be finished by Friday, but there’s the shawl, scarf, socks and hat that are OTN that I need to finish.  I also have a hooded scarf I want to have done for my son before it starts getting too cold, as well as new mitts for me.  Then there’s the spinning.

Not counting sewing projects, that’s 6 things.  Maybe I should dedicate a day for each of them?

Möbius. There’s Really No Other Way to Say It.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be part of a special workshop with Jude Skeers.  Möbius was the topic of the day, and not just how to knit one, but how to knit one that is sculptural and fitted.

Knitting a straight out Möbius is easy enough, even with learning Cat Bordhi’s VERY cool special cast on.  Jude adds an element of structure and form, with strategic increases & decreases so that the loop hugs you and drapes over your form.

He has mastered adding in lace, colour and texture to these Möbius masterpieces.  I am hoping to be able to work out some of the lace techniques for these, and as beautiful as they are plain, lace (as always) just adds that extra dimension of “Ooooh!”.

I can see me making a few of these, in different sizes, as they are just SO versatile!
